  • 2019 Bar Lazy S Ranch Pinot Noir
Santa Barbara County, Santa Rita Hills
    Expand
There’s only one way to describe the Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard: serene. Located in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County, these stunning hillsides feature vines that climb from 500 to 1,000 feet above sea level. The soils are marine-based and the weather is consistently cool thanks to moist ocean breezes that swept the property daily. The vineyard is farmed with the painstaking care and attention usually associated with much smaller properties. In fact, this vineyard was originally conceived as a series of individual micro-vineyards delineated by soil, exposure, elevation, grade, rootstock and clone. We harvest our grapes based on the ripeness of the tannins. For Pinot Noir this usually occurs between 24.5-27.0 Brix. The clusters were then gently de-stemmed with no crushing. The must was cold-soaked in open-top stainless-steel fermenters for four days. Each tank was manually punched down throughout maceration. Upon completion of primary fermentation and maceration, the free-run wine was transferred to a tank for settling. Next, the individual lots were racked to French oak barrels and aged for 18 months. The 2019 Bar Lazy S Ranch Pinot Noir is fruit-forward with vibrant aromas of cherry cola, cassis, and pipe tobacco. Integrated barrel spices contribute to flavors of grilled plum, and cherry galette with hints of dry roasted vanilla bean. With a lush mouthfeel, this wine lingers with notes of black tea and clove on the finish.

Finally, the individual lots were racked to barrels and aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak prior to blending and bottling. Deep, dark and concentrated, our 2018 Rancho Santa Rosa Pinot Noir features generous aromas of raspberry, blackberry, pomegranate, and sweet toasty oak. The palate is layered, lush and juicy with bright acidity, plenty of fruit and soft tannins. This is the perfect accompaniment for cedar plank salmon in a dark berry

Description

Any visit to Sta. Rita Hills must include a stop at Foley Estates. The property was founded by Bill Foley in the late 1990’s and today is one of the most important in the appellation. The winery’s success can be attributed to strict winemaking protocols and two extraordinary estate vineyards.

To guarantee the best possible fruit from both sites, Foley’s viticulture and winemaking teams have developed a unique micro-farming program. This complex process involves the mapping of soils and topography down to the smallest increment using soil pits and aerial photography. A total of 500 acres are under vine, with an emphasis on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
